Diamond Jubilee of signing the Dubai Commercial Air Agreement in 1937

The Queen, this year celebrating her Diamond Jubilee, is in good company with Dubai’s aviation industry reaching the same milestone. But while Queen Elizabeth gets the honour after 60 years, it has been a heady 75 years since commercial aviation began in Dubai, in 1937. The industry began when the British government sought permission from the late Shaikh Saeed bin Maktoum bin Hasher Al Maktoum, who ruled Dubai till 1958, to land flying boats at the Dubai Creek. Despite opposition from the community, Shaikh Saeed agreed, effectively transforming the way the nation would structure its future economy. “From this day on, the aviation industry in Dubai ascended ... steeply,” Dubai Civil Aviation Authority director-general Mohammed Ahli told a recent ceremony held to honour the achievement. The agreement between Dubai and Britain was considered to be “the first liberal, open skies agreement to be signed by any two countries in the world,” Ahli said. These flying boats, which mainly carried mail, were the only planes seen in Dubai’s skies for two decades until Shaikh Saeed’s son Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum became ruler and in 1960 built Dubai’s first airport on land, with the first modern airport following in 1971. Ahli said people thought it would take as much as 100 years before the large airport was properly used, but it had recently been projected there would be 90 million travellers a year using the airport within six years.
